âHey, yâall!â Aria sang as she strutted into the room with a Coach bag on her shoulder. âWhatâs wrong with Kadeem? I just walked by him and he didnât even speak.â
Everyone in the room eyed Aria from her stiletto clad feet to the top of her head. She had come down to the hospital dressed as if she was going on a date. Not only had she dressed to impress, but the Marc Jacobsâ Daisy perfume she wore filled the entire room. She didnât have on much makeup, but the dramatic eyelashes she wore were full-on glam. And the way she wore her locs tossed over to the side was pretty much glam, too. She was different. Everybody noticed it, and it had nothing to do with what she had on. It was the way she carried herself.
âYou look nice,â Phyllis complimented as she eyed her up and down. âBusiness at Luckyâs sure is picking up, huh?â
âRight,â Maia added. âLuckyâs.â
She was on a roll. Maia was usually quiet and reserved when it came to voicing her opinion about people, but not anymore. She had reached her witâs end weeks ago. Between Ariaâs absence and Kadeemâs bullshit, Maia wasnât sweet, caring Maia anymore. Not towards them, she wasnât, at least. She didnât even have an attitude, she was just tired of other peopleâs bullshit. Aria had been on her shitlist since she left her the night Juvie was shot. Since then, their relationship had been on a continuous down spiral.
âDang, Luckyâs paying like that?â Charm asked, eyeing Aria up and down. âPeople be sleeping on Coach, but I just got an email about that bag last week. Itâs new and was around four hundred when I checked the price. You eatinâ out here in lilâ olâ Kingston, huh?â
Aria nervously smiled and set her bag on the side table before approaching Juvieâs bed. The swelling in his face from fluids had gone down sustainably. Now looking down at him, it was almost as if he was just sleeping, excluding the tube and all.
âNobody told me what was wrong with Kadeem,â Aria said, changing the subject.
She didnât want to talk about her. She hated that the only clothes she had at Tonia were new, fancy clothes. She would have thrown on a pair of biker shorts, a tank top, and a pair of thong sandals if she couldâve. Aria knew the heeled sandals and the coral maxi dress would raise a few eyebrows. The entire ride to the hospital, Aria was on pins and needles about seeing her family dressed the way she was. She knew Phyllis would raise a brow and mention Luckyâs again. She planned on telling her mother about her new job, eventually⦠maybe. Aria didnât think she had to. Why would she have to? She was grown and out of the house, so she could do what she wanted to do⦠right? She didnât owe Phyllis an explanation. She didnât have to correct or clear anything up, so Maiaâs little snide remark held no weight.
